Citizen's Advice Bureaux (CAB)



The Citizens Advice service (The National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux - CAB) is a charity which offers free advice and helps with legal, money and other problems from over 3,200 bureaux in the UK, and influences policymakers.

It has over 20,000 volunteers the majority of whom are trained and deal with over 5.5 million problems each year. Its website, www.adviceguide.org.uk, receives over 7.3 million visits a year.

The independent service undertakes information, advice and sometimes casework. It principally helps by investigating problems and exploring and explaining options, sometimes helping to contact and deal with the relevant officials and counterparties.

A lot of CAB work involves debt management and welfare benefits. Advice is also given in community venues, in homes, by phone, by email and at www.adviceguide.org.uk.

Each local CAB or group is a separate charity.

Like all free advice charities it is under immense and growing pressure in the downturn, but it uses this also to advise government on needed improvements in debt law and practice.

It is often the body which creditors direct debtors to.

It really is a good idea to get to one for at least an initial session. The way of doing so varies, and can be quite stressful since each of us is one of a crowd in need of help.
