Book: Control Your Debt Crisis Debt Dictionary My blog on Wordpress Home page Debt Dictionaryat controlyourdebtcrisis.co.ukDebtDebt is essentially something owed. We most often use it for money, though it can include money, goods, services or honour. A debtor is the person or organisation in debt. That debt is owed to a creditor - the giver of the loan (i.e. credit). A debt differs from a gift; the gift is without condition, but a loan has the condition of being repaid, according to the terms agreed or imposed. the arrangement usually has been preceded by an examination of the ability of the prospective borrower, the debtor, to repay the loan, plus any additional costs, such as interest or lump sum [as under Sharia Law]. Failure to repay is likely to lead to actions to recover, by negotiation, or by threats, or by court action and consequences can include loss of property and sequestration of earnings in part. The debtor has some ways to protect their position, which may - at the extreme - be bankruptcy. My book explains the steps you should take and how to take them if you ever suffer the problem. There are also many informative articles on this site. The earlier you act when it is clear there is a hitch the more you are able to control the situation. Credit can be in many forms, including credit cards, loans, mortgages and promissory notes. In the financial casino - what the gamblers in it like to call financial service or sector - there are a number of instruments to gamble with such as bonds, default swaps, and a vast army of derivatives [invented for the pure purpose of skimming off the top]. The Financial Times regularly uses the term bet for even fairly standard market activities. There are various forms of debt open to public purchase, such as bonds. Bonds may be issued by governments [and worldwide the market is said to be worth £85 trillion] or companies.
