Book: Control Your Debt Crisis Debt Dictionary My blog on Wordpress Home page Debt Dictionaryat controlyourdebtcrisis.co.ukUsuryUsury was first used to mean the practice of charging any interest. Later it came to describe the practice of charging unreasonable rates. It is understood as an Abrahamaic belief that interest should not be charged. This is practised by some and the best-known version is Sharia Law, where the term Riba means something similar to usury. Bringing the practice of charging interest within the law seems to have started with an Act of Henry VIII in 1545. Usury seems always to have been linked to economic abuses, mostly of poor people. This is very much happening today and shows the failure of regulation and control. Perhaps it also sets people apart because of greed.
Usury was not permitted in ancient China. Today it seems the Triads are the 'loan sharks'. Interest in Henry's time was in the 20% to 30% range but fell to around 10%.
